The Surprise We Didn't Snow We Needed

Hi,
Here's something a little different ... "first time in 130 years" different! Snow started falling Tuesday morning (this alone is newsworthy) here in New Orleans, and it snowed all day, to the tune of 10-11 inches! The last time we got snow was in 2008 (1-2"), and the last time it snowed even close to this much was in 1895! The snow this week was a big, surreal, startling, incongruous, funny, confusing, playful deal for us ... and it brought some much needed peace and healing.

Wow, did all of our inner kids come out and play on Tuesday! Dave and I took our (very cutely coated of course) dogs for a walk, and the only sounds we could hear were whoops of joy and laughter. (Usually we live amid a symphony of New Orleans sounds like ships, trains, and marching bands practicing in the streets.) Everywhere we looked we saw snow angels. People sledded, skied, and snowboarded on the levees (our only hills!), and played ice hockey in the French Quarter. Outside of a beloved neighborhood bar, which was open and reminded me of something out of "It's a Wonderful Life," people sang Christmas carols. They seemed to sing "tidings of comfort and joy" over and over ... and over as we strolled by. The hot toddies must have been ... delicious!
Peace-full. Comfort. Joy. It goes without saying that our tragic and heartbreaking start to 2025 has maintained an especially heavy presence here since January 1st. This snow felt like a cleansing, healing chance to start fresh. It won't erase anything - we will not forget - but this snowy surprise made for a magical, healing few days that brought almost everyone out to play, sing, laugh, and heal, together.

In peace, gratitude, comfort, joy, & undergoodies,
Mindy
